Who's playing
Kay Krans and Hannah Menzia lead the class for the Northwoods Forest History Experience, a forest history museum in Manitowish Waters. The Experience is a joint project of the North Lakeland Discovery Center and the Manitowish Waters Historical Society, housed in a restored Civilian Conservation Corps barracks about 90 years old. Krans co-chaired that partnership and developed its display concepts.
What to expect
The class is hands-on and easy to pick up, with no experience needed. Journal pages can take many forms, including free-writing, free-drawing, scientific sketches, daily logs, maps, data entry and drawings of a place. Mixing formats is encouraged, so each person ends up with a journal that reflects their own time outdoors.
Why go
Nature journaling combines close observation, writing and sketching in one sitting, which slows down a walk in the woods. Having instructors who work on the region's forest history adds context to what you notice. The library is a simple, welcoming room to start from, and its backyard has picnic tables and benches for warmer months.
