Who's playing
Sandy Van Patten leads the class. She is a self-taught artist from Michigan's Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula, and broom making is her main craft. Semi-retired from her day job, she also teaches workshops in Marquette, Baraga, L'Anse, the Porcupine Mountains and Calumet.
What to expect
Students work with leather, waxed string and waxed cord to wrap stones into wearable or decorative pieces. Beads, keys and driftwood are there for adding your own touches. The techniques are simple, so the class works as a first try at this kind of wrapping. You can bring a favorite rock if you have one.

LOLA shares its building with Artistree Gallery, a cooperative of local artists, which makes the visit a good way to see regional work. The arts center runs classes year-round for children and adults, so this is one of many ways to take part. A rock you bring from home gives the finished piece a personal starting point.
