Genealogy

The Northern Waters Genealogical Society serves residents of northwest Vilas County, southeast Iron County and south central Gogebic County, on the Wisconsin and Michigan line. Its members range from people just beginning their research to experienced family historians. Speakers change from month to month, and recent ones have included Scott Norrick and Jessica Trotter, some presenting live by Zoom.

Each program stays on one research topic, such as German or Danish immigration, French Canadian lines, or how to use Michigan and Wisconsin records. A brief business meeting follows the talk. Sessions meet in person at the Boulder Junction Community Center, with a Zoom option for anyone who would rather join from home.

The society picks its topics from what members say they want to learn, so the subjects tend to match real research problems. Anyone with an interest in family history is welcome, whether or not they are members. The group also holds an annual members and guests picnic in August at the Manitowish Waters Lions Club Pavilion.
