4-Week Handbuilding Ceramics Class

Tuesday, November 3 at The Warehouse Community Arts Center, Minocqua

The Warehouse Community Arts Center · Eagle River

About this event

This class is for anyone who loves to get their hands muddy and play with clay; there are so many fun ways to create ceramics that aren't the pottery wheel! You'll learn the basic techniques of handbuilding like slab and coil building, as well as working with essential tools, to make your own functional and decorative pottery. Also learn a variety of ways to glaze/finish your work. If you have ideas of what you'd like to make, bring them too! This is a 4-session series with instructor Johanna Buwalda.

Who's playing

Johanna Buwalda teaches the series. She grew up in the Netherlands, started learning pottery as a teenager, and has worked as a therapist and trainer as well. She moved to the Northwoods in 2018 and runs a home pottery studio on the Wisconsin River, selling her work at regional art and craft fairs.

What to expect

Each session is hands-on, with most of the time spent building with slabs and coils. You can bring your own ideas about what to make, and the work ends up as functional or decorative pottery. Clay, firing and glazing are included, and the class also covers several ways to finish a piece.

Why go

This suits anyone who likes getting their hands muddy and does not need a wheel. The Warehouse is a public arts space in downtown Eagle River, built around classes, performing arts and community events. A four-week run gives you enough time to finish several pieces and learn how the glazes behave.
