About this event
Head to Rocky Reef Brewing Company on the first Thursday of each month for a unique evening of science, beer and conversation! At Science on Tap-Minocqua, you won’t find jargon or a just a PowerPoint presentation. Topics are wide ranging, spanning issues from bacteria to bees and from a search for life on other planets to a search to the perfect pint. The series provides a forum where the public engages with experts in a informal, two-way conversation about important issues of the day. Speakers provide 15-20 minutes of opening remarks, then the floor is open for questions, allowing the audience to join in on the conversation. The result is a dynamic, engaging community gathering. Thank you to our fellow Science on Tap partners: UW-Madison’s Trout Lake Station, UW-Madison’s Kemp Natural Resources Station, the Lakeland-Badger chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the Minocqua Public Library, WXPR, and Rocky Reef Brewing Company.
What to expect
Speakers give 15 to 20 minutes of opening remarks, then the floor opens for questions from the room. There is no slideshow and no heavy jargon, so it feels more like a conversation than a lecture. The series runs monthly from October through May, and anyone who cannot make it to the brewery can watch a live stream, submit questions online and catch archived videos later.
Why go
Rocky Reef is a fitting room for this. Owners Tyler and Christie Smith opened the brewery in 2015 on a half-barrel system, and it now brews on a 15-barrel house. The tasting room has a long bar and a front garden, and the beer list runs from West Coast IPAs to sours and stouts. It is an easy way to spend an evening hearing experts talk plainly about real questions.
