The Northwoods Genealogy Society is a group of local family historians who meet monthly, except July, in the downstairs meeting room of the Rhinelander District Library. The library is a short drive from Minocqua. The meetings are a working session for people tracing their own family lines, and visitors are welcome.
What to expect
Members share what has worked in their research and help each other past the brick walls that stall ancestor searches. The society has indexed the 1855 Wisconsin State Census and built a cemetery index and an obituary index drawn from Rhinelander newspapers back to 1882. Anyone just starting out can arrange to meet with a member for one-on-one guidance.
Why go
The meetings sit inside the library's genealogy department, so the society's publications, books, microfilm and indexes are close at hand. Local records like the Rhinelander newspaper indexes are the kind of material that is hard to track down on your own. For anyone stuck on a family line, a room of people who have hit the same wall is a useful place to start.
