Natural Pages: The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan

Tuesday, November 10 at Kohler Library, Minocqua

Kohler Library

About this event

A partnership between the Discovery Center and Koller Library, each month we will focus on a different nature-based book each month, with discussions led by either Discovery Center or library staff. Books will be available for checkout at the library in the weeks prior to the meeting. The Great Lakes--Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior--hold 20 percent of the world's supply of surface fresh water and provide sustenance, work, and recreation for tens of millions of Americans. But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent. The Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan's compulsively readable portrait of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes, blending the epic story of the lakes with an examination of the perils they face and the ways we can restore and preserve them for generations to come. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but is appreciated. This month's Natural Pages Reading Group gathering will be held at the Koller Library in Manitowish Waters. Tuesday, November 10th, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

What to expect

Each month the group focuses on a different nature-based book, and discussions are led by Discovery Center or library staff. Copies of the book can be checked out at the library in the weeks before the meeting, so readers have time to finish it. It is a relaxed, talk-driven gathering built around the book's mix of lake history, science and reporting.

Why go

Dan Egan is a prize-winning reporter, and this book blends the epic story of the lakes with a close look at the threats they face. The Great Lakes hold about 20 percent of the world's surface fresh water, and the book shows how much work and recreation depends on them. It also covers how the lakes can be restored and preserved, which gives the discussion a forward-looking edge.
