Learning in Retirement: The Who, What, Why, and How of Powers of Attorney

About this event
The Who, What, Why, and How of Powers of Attorney is a Learning in Retirement class at Nicolet College in Rhinelander, a short drive from Minocqua. Nurse practitioner Diane Tatrow and attorney Amanda Trecartin cover both medical and financial or legal powers of attorney. It is a practical session on a document many families put off.
Who's playing
Diane Tatrow is a nurse practitioner, board-certified in gerontology, advanced oncology and palliative care. She helped bring palliative care to the community at St. Mary's Hospital in 2014 and has put medical power of attorney into practice in end-of-life care. Amanda Trecartin is an attorney with Hougum Law Firm in Wausau, a practice that handles estate planning, elder law and probate. She studied social work at Andrews University and went on to law school at UW-Madison.
What to expect
The class is built for several kinds of listeners: people with no power of attorney yet, people drafting one or both, people who want to review, update or revoke an existing one, and people who have agreed to serve as someone's agent. The session includes a Q&A period. Optional one-on-one coaching helps attendees complete a Medical POA, using materials kept on site.
Why go
Being named someone's agent comes with real duties, and this class spells them out in plain terms. The class is part of Nicolet's Learning in Retirement program, which is created and directed by retired and semi-retired Northwoods residents. Questions are welcome, and the subject is one that many families in the Northwoods will face sooner or later.
