Home Safety for Seniors is a class in Nicolet College's Learning in Retirement program, taught by an Aging & Disability Resource Center specialist. It looks at how to change a home so people can keep living on their own as they age. The session is one of the program's classes on meeting the challenges of aging, held on the Rhinelander campus for readers across the Minocqua area.
Who's playing
Jennifer Sackett is an ADRC specialist with the Aging & Disability Resource Center. The ADRC serves older adults and adults with physical or intellectual disabilities, with the goal of helping them live with dignity, security and as much independence as possible. In this class she brings that work into the home, showing how to spot risks and weigh what to change.
What to expect
The class covers tripping hazards, lighting, and supportive fixtures that can be added to a home. Members also learn to spot potential problems and consider steps that could prevent accidents, falls and injuries. Learning in Retirement classes are relaxed and informal, with no grades or tests, so the session is a discussion-style look at the home people already live in.
Why go
Learning in Retirement keeps its classes short and informal, and this one takes on a question many people put off: how safe the house will be in the years ahead. The focus stays on the home itself, so the ideas apply to a place a reader already lives. For Minocqua-area residents thinking ahead about staying put, it is a practical class to know about.
