About this event
Join a Discovery Center Naturalist as we reveal this month's book A Mischief of Mice by Christie Matheson. In this fun, rhyming, nature-inspired whodunit picture book, five mice disappear on a blustery fall day, a worried scurry of squirrels sets out to find them, questioning a clutter of spiders, a skulk of foxes, and a band of coyotes along the way. Please register the child/children names only. Space is limited and registration is required by 11/20/26. These programs are free of charge and are sponsored by the Shepherd-Howells Fund. Participants will meet in the Forest Classroom in the Discovery Hall. The first 10 families to register will receive a copy of the book thanks to the generosity of the Shepherd-Howells Fund! Saturday, November 21st, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
What to expect
Participants gather in the Forest Classroom inside Discovery Hall, then head out to the trail as the naturalist reveals the book. The story follows a worried scurry of squirrels searching for the missing mice. Along the way they question a clutter of spiders, a skulk of foxes and a band of coyotes. The reading is paced by the walk, so it feels more like a hike with a story than a sit-down storytime.
Why go
The mystery is a whodunit told through woodland animals, so younger listeners get to guess along with the squirrels. The trail runs across the Discovery Center's 66 acres on Statehouse Lake in the Northern Highland State Forest. The StoryWalk is a year-round program with a new book each month, run jointly with the Frank B. Koller Memorial Library, so the setting is worth knowing even beyond this title.
