Lake Superior Driftwood Gnome Magnets - Upstairs with Sandy Van Patten
Saturday, November 7 at LOLA Arts, Minocqua

About this event
Lake Superior Driftwood Gnome Magnets is a hands-on art class at LOLA Arts in Land O' Lakes, within easy reach of Minocqua. Students take a piece of Lake Superior driftwood and build a gnome from found beach treasures, then finish it as a magnet for the fridge. Sandy Van Patten teaches the class, and it suits anyone who likes making something with their hands.
Who's playing
Sandy Van Patten is a self-taught artist from the Copper Country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She is semi-retired from her day job but still devoted to broom making and to passing on traditional craft. Her classes have been held in Marquette, Baraga, L'Anse, the Porcupine Mountains and Calumet.
What to expect
Each student decorates a driftwood gnome with an assortment of natural and found pieces. The list includes metal, bones, rocks, mushrooms, birch bark, moss and feathers. No two gnomes come out alike, because every one gets its own personality from the materials chosen. The class meets in LOLA's upstairs classroom.
Why go
The finished gnome is a small keepsake with a bit of Lake Superior in it. LOLA is a nonprofit that offers art classes year-round, and it shares its building with Artistree Gallery, a cooperative of about 30 local artists. For a Northwoods afternoon of making, this class is an easy choice.
