About this event
Lake Superior Driftwood Gnome Magnets is a hands-on art class at LOLA Arts in Land O' Lakes, a short drive from Minocqua. Students turn pieces of Lake Superior driftwood into small, whimsical gnomes that stick to a refrigerator. The class is taught by Sandy Van Patten, a self-taught artist from Michigan's Copper Country.
Who's playing
Sandy Van Patten is a self-taught artist from the Copper Country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She is semi-retired from her day job but still teaches traditional craftsmanship, including broom making. Her classes have been held across the Upper Peninsula, from Marquette to Calumet.
What to expect
Each gnome starts with a piece of Lake Superior driftwood and is dressed with whatever the student chooses from a mix of metal, bones, rocks, mushrooms, birch bark, moss and feathers. Because everyone picks different treasures, no two gnomes end up with the same personality. The focus is fun and play rather than technical skill.
Why go
Most of LOLA's classes lean toward painting, printmaking and fused glass, so a driftwood project is a different kind of afternoon. The finished magnet is small enough to take home and use every day. LOLA is run by Land O' Lakes Area Artisans, which promotes the arts across Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula.
