About this event
The Historical Fiction Book Club meets at Walter E. Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River, within easy reach of Minocqua. This meeting takes up Tom Lake, Ann Patchett's 2023 novel set on a Michigan cherry orchard. New attendees are always welcome, so a first visit is no problem.
What to expect
The session is a discussion of Tom Lake, a novel that moves between summer 1984 and spring 2020. In 2020, three grown daughters come home to help pick cherries during the pandemic, and their mother starts telling them about a summer in a small theater company. The library was renovated and expanded in 2017, and its adult area has a fireplace for reading and talking.
Why go
Tom Lake is a warm, funny book about family, memory and the choices people make about the past, and critics have praised its tone. The club gives you a reason to read it and then talk it through with other readers. It is a good fit for anyone who likes historical fiction and wants a relaxed evening of conversation in Eagle River.
